OUR STORY

Learn more about the Steel Horse.

What makes steel horse so special?

The Steel Horse is nestled among sweeping mountain vistas, rolling hills, and open skies. Every corner of the property invites connection, celebration, and moments that linger.

Owners, Christina and David, became stewards of this land in 2022 and have thoughtfully curated this space for intentionality and connection.

Gatherings here unfold across versatile settings, from the rustic barn and outdoor ceremony site to the beer garden and historic train car, all framed by the natural beauty of the landscape, creating a breathtaking backdrop for weddings and celebrations that feel effortless, intimate, and unforgettable.

Originally built in 1981 and operated as an inn and restaurant by the Carrs, all of the lumber used for construction was milled and planed in their sawmill just a few miles west of the property. Mr. Carr cut timber on 3,000 acres of mining claims right above the mining town of Bonanza, CO and hauled the boiler that currently sits on display in front of the guest rooms down from the nearby mountains.

Over the years, the restaurant was transformed into the owner’s residence; and in 2017, previous owners Julie & Dave Poole, got to work on many of the unique features you see today! This includes the vintage railcar lounge, renovating the barn, establishing the outdoor ceremony site, and building the caterer’s kitchen.

A curated wedding retreat destination

Every detail — from hammocks tucked under the trees to outdoor blankets under starlit skies, from water thoughtfully placed in every space, to welcome notes that set the tone — is designed to help guests relax, connect, and savor the moment.

The Steel Horse is more than a venue. It’s a place where celebrations unfold naturally, memories linger long after the last toast, and guests feel held, inspired, and fully present.

"STanley" the steel horse

Once a fixture outside a beloved local restaurant, the steel horse statue at the heart of the property is more than a striking centerpiece—it embodies the spirit of this place. Combining the raw energy and freedom of the horse with the strength and permanence of steel, it reflects the harmony between nature and thoughtful design that defines every experience here. It stands as a symbol of resilience, intentionality, and adventure—a reminder that this is a space where guests can slow down, connect deeply, and create lasting memories.

ABOUT THE OWNERS

Hi! I’m Christina; co-owner of the Steel Horse. For most of my career I've planned events and experiences at venues all over the world that bring people and communities together.

Having my own unique destination to offer couples, wedding planners, and intentional gathering organizers that were just like me has been a dream of mine for many years.

In 2022 my husband and I purchased the Steel Horse and immediately recognized how incredibly special, serene, and one-of-a-kind it is.

It's truly the ideal destination for genuine, intimate, intentional, nature-immersed retreat experiences – it’s also my dream come true.
